Currently, the divisional commissioner is the only district magistrate for Delhi as far as the discharge of magisterial work is concerned.

"The law department of Delhi government took up the matter with the Central government to enable the division of hitherto single metropolitan area for public convenience as the population of Delhi has increased over a period of years," said a senior Delhi government official.

Keeping in view the recommendations of the committee and uneven population in the nine districts, it became imminent to amend the boundaries of nine districts and develop them into 11 revenue and sessions' districts.
