After an intense search spanning three states over five days, Delhi Police on Friday managed to arrest one of the four men who had allegedly abducted and gangraped a Delhi University student in a moving car in the early hours of Sunday.

Ajit Kumar Katiyar (28), a driver with a private company whose features had been described by the 22-year-old victim, was picked up this morning from a colony near the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.

Ajit Kumar, one of the accused, arrested.
  Other three wanted accused.

He was subjected to interrogation during which he broke down and confessed to having committed the crime, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West district) Deependra Pathak told reporters.

Three other accused in the sensational case, which earned Delhi Police wrath from Parliament and National Commission for Women (NCW) continue to evade arrest.

"At first instance, Katiyar proved to be hardened, misleading and deceptive but he finally accepted his guilt. Accordingly, he has been arrested," he said.

However, he was yet to be produced in an identification parade before the victim. "We will follow the due legal course in this regard," Pathak said.

Hailing from Kanpur rural district, Katiyar was a historysheeter with at least 10 cases of attempt to murder, auto-theft and arms act registered against him, including for shooting at a police party.

Katiyar had been staying in and around the city for the last five years, but had given a string of false addresses forcing the police to go on a wild goose chase even though they had managed to identify him as the 'prime suspect' a day after the gangrape.

Over a hundred people had been detained and a similar number of raids conducted at various places in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana before the breakthrough today.
