Delhi Metro installs 1,237 CCTVs

These CCTVs have been installed at all metro stations located on Shahdara-Rithala, Central Secretariat-Vishwa Vidyalaya and Indraprastha-Dwarka (Sector 9) lines.

With the help of more than 1,000 close circuit cameras, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is all set to put all 59 stations on the three lines under electronic surveillance from Monday.

A total of 1,237 CCTVs have been installed at all metro stations located on Shahdara-Rithala, Central Secretariat-Vishwa Vidyalaya and Indraprastha-Dwarka (Sector 9) lines.

“All activities that take place inside the Metro premises will be recorded and kept for a fixed time period and can be used as conclusive evidence in cases involving any such situation,” DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said in a release.

The DMRC expects that the CCTV cameras will also act as a deterrent to potential eve-teasers and those who cause nuisance to other passengers inside the Metro premises as they can be taken up under the Delhi Metro (Operations and Maintenance) Act 2002, which provides for stringent penalties for those violating provisions of the Act.

The DMRC also plans to install cameras inside the trains that will be procured for Phase II. However, the trains running on Phase I do not have the facility. “The facility needs to be introduced at the time of manufacture (of coaches). We cannot pull out the running trains now. A decision about this will be taken later considering the cost and other factors,” Dayal said.
