The victim, whose identity is not known, was killed after the mob attacked him following rumours that he was planning to kidnap a minor girl with the help of a friend.

At around 2:30 pm, a group of unknown persons, gathered near E-block in Khajoori Khas and thrashed the young man without verifying the rumours. Allegedly, the mob continued to beat him up, even after he pleaded innocence.

“ They (mob) were in fact unaware of the crime the youth had committed. Nobody in the mob had seen him kidnapping a child but they simply trusted the rumour and killed him,” said a police officer.

“Suddenly, a group of people surrounded one of the youths and started thrashing him because he was not a known face in the locality. The mob kept assaulting him even as he pleaded innocence and even the girl’s mother did not confirm that he was attempting to kidnap her daughter,” he added.

A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against unknown persons.

A CCTV video footage showed policemen removing the young man’s body from the crime scene.
