Delhi police roll out elaborate safety plan

Commissioner says deputy commissioners will patrol areas till midnight; all firms ordered to drop women staff home after 8pm.

Senior-most officers of districts patrolling its streets till midnight, mobile units with blaring sirens near evening hangouts and integrated crack teams armed with challan books and a 'zero-tolerance' policy - the Delhi Police claimed to have chalked out an elaborate plan to make the Capital safe for women.

Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar said the deputy commissioners of each of Delhi's 10 police districts have been directed to personally patrol their jurisdiction, with special emphasis on dimly-lit and non-motorable bylanes.

"They will do so daily and at least till midnight when they are relieved by the respective senior officers, called government officer (GO), who will then carry the patrolling exercise forward," Kumar told Hindustan Times.

Vehicles belonging to the Police Control Room (PCR) have been taken off 'static' mode and now, according to police, would be deployed to increase visibility across more than five dozen popular nightspots across the Capital after dark.

"Here too, there would be an emphasis on ensuring that bylanes and slip roads are patrolled and are under constant vigil and surveillance. In addition, there will be police personnel in plain clothes deployed throughout a market to keep an eye on the law and order situation," said a senior officer, requesting anonymity.

While checking of vehicles at pickets and barricades located on arterial roads would continue, each district would have 10 different teams to conduct integrated checking and challaning of violators.
