The maximum temperature shot up to 43 degree Celsius, which was two degree above the normal for this time of the season while the minimum temperature settled at 30.2 degree Celsius, three notches above normal.

"A heat wave condition prevails over the national capital following hot westerly winds blowing from Rajasthan. The day temperatures are likely to rise further during the week," an official at Safdarjung Met department told IANS.

The Met department has forecast that the day temperature would touch 44 degree Celsius Tuesday with possibility of a dust storm.

The scorching heat left the residents of Delhi restless and they were seen drinking water and taking refuge under shady trees. The roads in the national capital wore a deserted look.

"Despite covering my face with the dupatta (stole) and sipping water every now and then, I felt like I was literally roasted during the 20 minutes ride in the auto today," said a hassled Sangita Verma.
