The scholars studying African affairs undertake a field study to gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of Africa. However, due to funds constraint, the department has been able to send only one PhD scholar for field study every year. In view of the "renewed focus" on the continent, it hopes to get more funds to send more scholars for field study to Africa. Inter-disciplinary seminars, conferences and workshops are the major activities of the department.

In addition to MPhil and PhD programmes, the department offers one-year certificate and diploma courses in the Swahili language.
