Delhi University warms up for students

The varsity is all set to welcome new students. On Saturday, SGTB Khalsa College kicked-off the Open Day series at North Campus of DU. Saba Sharma reports.

On Saturday, SGTB Khalsa College kicked-off the Open Day series at North Campus of Delhi University. Apart from a presentation on the university, a question and answer session was also conducted. The college held a counselling session for the participants.

Speaking to the participating candidates and their parents, DU dean, students’ welfare, SK Vij said while applicants visit as many colleges as possible, the application procedure could be simplified by using OMR or ICR forms. “There are 15 centres across the city where these forms, priced at Rs 30, can be bought and submitted. Starting June 2, university information bulletins will also be available,” said Vij.

Some of the participants expressed concern about relaxation of marks for the OBC category. Khalsa College principal Jaswinder Singh specified that there would be a maximum difference of 10 per cent in the cut-off marks for the OBC category and those of the general category, even if it means a few seats are left vacant.

At the counselling session, officials and faculty members of the university answered questions. Seema Parihar, who teaches Geography at Kirori Mal College, was one of the counsellors.

“Find the course you love, and do it, wherever it’s offered. There are no good colleges or bad colleges, it’s more important to do something you like because you’ll be good at it. In the end, everyone gets a BA degree from Delhi University. And if going to a certain college really matters to you, you can always migrate after first year if you do well,” she said.

She also urged students to think beyond the popular courses.
