Mukesh Sharma, the parliamentary secretary to the chief minister, said people must be allowed to celebrate the festival with joy and fervour. He appealed to people not to use crackers as it would add to the pollution in the city.

Sharma held public meetings after initiating Rs 3.5-crore worth developmental work at Bindapur, Pratap Garden, Mohan Garden and Om Vihar.

He said the government was making available huge funds for developmental schemes to make the lives of people more comfortable with modern facilities. On the other hand, the three BJP-ruled civic corporations are working overtime to extract money from people on flimsy grounds, he alleged.

"Their leaders have become hungry for money. The corporations have been shirking their basic responsibilities of ensuring sanitation and cleanliness, resulting in dengue and garbage on Diwali," he said.
