Discom-DLF power play crushes residents
DLF City in Gurgaon is reeling under power outages for as long as 10-12 hours at a stretch, reports Sanjeev K Ahuja.
Thursday: No power from 2 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Another power cut at 4:30 p.m.
Monday: No power from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
DLF City in Gurgaon is reeling under power outages for as long as 10-12 hours at a stretch.
Outages are reported even when supply is adequate as overloaded sub-stations fail to meet rising demand.
An overloaded transformer in DLF Phase I tripped on Thursday and there was no power for at least 12 hours. The power supply again failed on the same feeder at 4.30 p.m.
On Monday, power supply was restored in DLF City Phase II after a long wait of 10 hours. The supply got disrupted at 11.00 a.m. and was restored only at 9.30 p.m.
R.S. Rathee, president of DLF Qutub Enclave resident welfare association, attributed power failures to “poor and over loaded” sub-stations, transformers and feeders that have not been upgraded in proportion to the increasing need for power in the area.
“Many substations in DLF City are overloaded and are operating beyond their capacity. The DLF and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) are at loggerheads on the issue of upgradation of the substations,” he said.
“Because of their bickering the residents are suffering.”
The managing director of the power board, Anurag Agarwal, told HT from Hissar that the board wanted to take over the entire power distribution system in all private colonies and maintain it.
“But this can happen only after the developers fulfill their responsibility of deficiencies related to development of power distribution infrastructure at their own cost,” he said.
A DLF official, not wishing to be named, claimed they installed five transformers recently despite the fact that it was not their responsibility.
“The power board continues releasing power connections without any check on the maximum capacity load without consulting us. But they expect us to up-grade the system at our own cost. It is not possible,” the DLF official said.
Agarwal said DLF authorities were reluctant to spend money on infrastructure, forcing the power board to take government’s help in this regard.
