For this, the DMRC has already converted two four-coach trains into six-coach prototype trains. These trains are being tested at the DMRC's maintenance depots.

"We will introduce some six-coach trains into the fleet by early next year. By 2011 end, DMRC will run 89 six-coach trains," said DMRC officials.

The additional coaches will be able to carry about 600 more passengers per train trip. A four-coach train has a carrying capacity ranging from 1,200 to 1,500. Each six-coach train will be able to carry about 1,800 to 2,100 passengers per trip, said the officials. At present, the DMRC has 129 train sets and by the end of 2011, the fleet will have 201 trains. Out of these 201 trains, 112 trains will have four coaches and 89 trains will have six coaches.

The DMRC has already ordered extra coaches in the combination of motorcar and trailer car. These will start arriving from the end of this year and will be coupled with the existing train sets for conversion. The coupling requires about 2-3 days and then the trains are tested for interface with the existing system like signaling, interchange and crossovers, said the sources.
