A Delhi court has sentenced a 68-year-old woman, Prem, accused of killing her daughter-in-law, Anita, for dowry to seven years jail. Her two sons were also sentenced to the same period of imprisonment. HT reports.

The court said, “It is proved that just before the victim’s death, demand of Maruti car was raised and she was treated with cruelty and was harassed in connection with the same.”
Anita and Raj Kumar had got married on March 8, 2000, and her in-laws had begun demanding dowry articles, including motorcycle and buffalo, besides cash within six months of the marriage.
While sentencing Raj, Prem and Anita’s brother-in-law Bijender, the court also imposed a fine of R50,000 on each of them. The court stipulated that, if recovered, R75,000 out of it would go to Anita's parents as compensation.
