Dowry law to be reviewed by ministry

For a piece of legislation that was passed after prolonged agitation by women’s groups, Section 498A of the IPC that deals with dowry-related torture and domestic violence, is again giving the groups sleepless nights, reports Namita Kohli.

For a piece of legislation that was passed after prolonged agitation by women’s groups, Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code that deals with dowry-related torture and domestic violence, is again giving the groups sleepless nights.

On Tuesday, nine prominent women’s organisations got together at the office of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) here to pass a memorandum against ‘dilution’ of the law by a Delhi High Court order passed on August 4.

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development will sit down on Wednesday to review the law that makes the offences non-bailable.

The court judgment last month had stressed ‘reconciliation’ for married women seeking to invoke Section 498A.
