DU placement cell gets more students, companies

It is a busy time for Delhi University's central placement cell (CPC) with the seventh placement session set to start on Friday.

The CPC has seen close to 11,000 registrations this year, up by 500 compared to last year. And the good news is that close to 50 companies have already registered with the cell for conducting placement sessions.

"We have already managed to place around 350 students in different companies. We will continue to have more sessions in the coming month. Last year, more than 1,000 students were placed," said Gulshan Sawhney, deputy dean, Students' Welfare.

What, according to the university officials, is new in the last two years is an expression of interest by Japanese firms in hiring Indian students.

"Last year, two Japanese firms had come to DU. This year, five firms have contacted us already. We are talking to them and things will be finalised in the coming weeks. Foreign firms do not have a lot of ready manpower and are looking at India for skilled workers. We are expecting more foreign firms to look at India in the coming years," said JM Khurrana, dean, Students' Welfare.

In the placements that have been made so far, the highest package has been Rs 4 lakh. The average package is Rs 3 lakh.

On Friday, two firms - Freight Systems and Manpower - will recruit students. The university will also hold a workshop on photography as a profession.

"Freight Systems, a Dubai-based company, is looking for students in the field of communication. They will be looking for BA and B Com students. Manpower, on the other hand, is a firm that provides companies with suitable job candidates and is looking for students from all fields," Sawhney added.
