Following protests from many quarters, including external affairs minister SM Krishna, Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy and relatives of the victims, the shipping ministry distanced itself from additional solicitor general Harin Raval’s contention in the Supreme Court that India lacked jurisdiction to detain an Italian ship, from which a couple of marines had shot two Indian fishermen.

“The government is clear that the incident happened in Indian waters,” shipping minister GK Vasan said.

“It might be his personal opinion,” he said, responding to Raval’s submission that the ship – Enrica Lexie – cannot be detained as it was not in Indian territorial waters when the marines allegedly shot the two Indian fishermen on February 15.
