Eat your jewellery this Diwali

Since Delhiites have had no choice but to go slow on jewellery shopping given the astronomical gold prices, the capital's confectioners have come up with an alternative - chocolate jewellery. Shara Ashraf reports.

This Diwali may have less of sparkle, but promises to be sweeter than other years.

Since Delhiites have had no choice but to go slow on jewellery shopping given the astronomical gold prices, the capital's confectioners have come up with an alternative - chocolate jewellery.

Coffee and butterscotch bracelets, rose-flavoured earrings and mint neckpieces that melt in the mouth.

"With Diwali coming late this year, the climate has allowed us to launch the trend here, as chocolate doesn't melt easily in pleasant weather," says Nidhi Bhageria of Celeste Chocolates in Dhaula Kuan.

Bhageria has launched a Diwali special jewellery range.

"I have already sold around 35 sets of chocolate jewellery, and orders are still pouring in," she added.

The edible trinkets cost anything between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 10,000.

Cake and chocolate designer Nitin Khurana of The Sweet Boutique in GK I does a lot of filigree work on chocolate and also uses gold and silver dust to decorate Diwali cakes.

This year, he is using the same techniques on his line of chocolate jewellery.

Delhiites, meanwhile, are buying away.

"I have bought seven sets of chocolate earrings and chains to gift to my cousins," says mediaperson Sonali Chowdhury.
