‘Economically strong but a long way to go’

And the report had it all: impressive economic growth amid global economic uncertainty, and its inclusive nature, focusing on tribals and backward sections. There was also recognition of people’s frustration over corruption allegations, with the PM saying the government was sincere about addressing it.

Singh said that despite an adverse international environment, the Indian economy grew at about 7% this year, among the highest in the world.

On the perception of policy paralysis, he said, “Misconceived perceptions can be corrected.”

He, however, stressed the need for fiscal responsibility at the Centre and states, saying some tough decisions needed to be taken.

Gandhi, meanwhile, underlined work done for marginal sections. “The assured government purchases will encourage the business of tribal and backward people,” she said.

Gandhi also underlined that the UPA’s performance in the next Lok Sabh would depend on the “nature of work” the alliance did rather than just promises.
