A 42-year-old retired armyman has been arrested on charges of trying to pass on classified information to an agent of the ISI in Jama Masjid area on Tuesday night.
In the past two years, four defence personnel have been arrested for leaking sensitive information to spies, while 16 persons have been arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police in the past five years for passing on classified information to ISI agents.
On Tuesday night, the special cell of Delhi Police arrested Jawed Ahmad, a retired army man, from the walled city. Police seized two booklets from his possession relating to “combat engineering”. The books had been obtained from the Army Training Centre in Roorkee.
A school dropout, Jawed has allegedly been providing classified information to the spies for the past two years. He is a resident of Hapur in Uttar Pradesh. He is married and has a son. “He has provided secret information about the army on six occasions to a spy whom he identified as Siddiqui. He was introduced to the spy by a neighbour, Salauddin,” said Alok Kumar, DCP (special cell).
The officer said that for the last transaction Jawed had received a sum of Rs 15,000. “The ISI agent paid Jawed depending on the sensitivity of the information. This time he was arrested before he could hand over the documents to the ISI agent,” said the officer.
The accused had joined the Indian Army as a sepoy in 1984 and retired in 2001. In 2006 he came in contact with Salauddin who allegedly motivated him to work for the ISI agent in lieu of money. “Jawed visited various army establishments in India and collected sensitive information and passed it on to the ISI agent. This time he had procured the data from Army Training Centre in Roorkee,” said Kumar.

Jawed has been sent to five days police remand. He could not be reached for comments nor his family could be traced.
