The daughter of a retired Delhi Police assistant commissioner was shot dead while trying to stop her father from committing suicide on Sunday evening.

Jai Bhagwan Malik, 62, who retired in 2005, allegedly tried to shoot himself with his licensed gun around 5.25 pm at his Pitampura residence. His daughter Rajni, 31, tried to stop him, but Malik resisted.
In the scuffle, the trigger got pulled and a bullet hit Rajni in the chest. Malik then shot himself, a police officer said.
Both father and daughter were rushed to Saroj Hospital nearby. A doctor said Rajni was declared dead within half an hour. But before dying, despite being in shock, she was able to narrate the entire incident, doctors said. Malik was in a critical condition till late on Monday.
“The bullet hit Rajni in the chest. Malik then shot himself. We have registered a case of murder and attempted suicide against him,” said DCP (Northwest) Maneesh Agarwal. The police have found a suicide note written by Malik, where he said he was upset with his physical condition and family problems. Malik was on regular dialysis and suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems, said a doctor.
