The accused, identified as Gursharan Singh, and his aides have cheated more than 100 youths of several lakhs of rupees in the past 10 years, the police said.

Devesh Chandra Srivastava, additional CP (central), said that Singh was arrested from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh by a team led by SHO Patel Nagar, Rituraj, following a complaint lodged by one Himanshu Gaba.

"Gaba had claimed that Singh cheated him of Rs. 7 lakh by promising him a job in the merchant navy after completing the course from his institute. Singh even sent the complainant and two other men to Cyprus, allegedly with fake documents. The accused failed to provide Gaba the promised job and also refused to return the amount paid by the complainant," Srivastava said.

"As many young people were willing to join the merchant navy, he started an institute. He earned in lakhs and has been able to set up an education hub in Mathura," said Srivastava, adding, "Singh was previously involved in two cheating cases registered in Delhi and Varanasi."
