Examining if CrPC amendments helped pub case accused: Chowdhary

Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhary said she was examining whether the accused in the Mangalore pub attack case got away due to the new amendments in the CrPC Act.

Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhary on Tuesday said she was examining whether the accused in the Mangalore pub attack case got away due to the new amendments in the CrPC Act.

"We are examining sections under which people were arrested and the sections under which they were released," she told reporters adding that the law in itself needed to be examined.

Chowdhary said, "we are examining the mandate of the CrPC to see how it impacts women and how much it dilutes...And I am looking at it in the Mangalore context to see whether these fellows have got away with that".

On the report of the independent team, which had gone, to probe the attacks, she said, the team has come back only on Tuesday and will submit a report after which the ministry would take a viewpoint.

Questioned as to why the ministry deemed it necessary to send a separate team despite a National Commission for Women team having gone there earlier, she said since the NCW team had not submitted its report within five days, she decided to send an independent team of the ministry taking into account the urgency of the matter.
