After a day’s lull, fog made a comeback at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Thursday and affected the movement of nearly 100 flights. Two flights were diverted to Jaipur.
“We had predicted CAT III fog for two hours in the morning. It doesn’t have much effect as the IGI airport is equipped to tackle shallow fog. Visibility is again likely to reduce on Friday morning from 4:30am onwards,” a senior met department officer said.
An Indigo flight coming from Bangalore and a Jetlite flight coming from Hyderabad were diverted while eight other flights were cancelled due to various reasons.
The Met department said similar conditions would continue for the next few days.
“Flight operations will be hampered only if visibility goes below 50 metres. That situation is likely to arrive only after December 25,” the officer added.
Railway services also took a hit. Thirty-four more trains were cancelled. High-speed trains such as Rajdhani and Shatabdi on many routes were also cancelled.
On Thursday, around 150 trains ran behind schedule. “We have cancelled 34 more trains to decongest most affected routes during fog,” a senior railway officer said.
