The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-Bombay) is the most preferred choice among the top 100 rank-holders of the Joint Entrance Examination-2012, officials revealed after wrapping up the first round of counselling on Monday.
The most sought-after branch of study, they said, was the computer science and engineering course at the same institute.Interestingly, IIT-Bombay has been holding the fancy of JEE candidates for the last three-four years. IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakhar said: "Our institute has been continually re-inventing itself in terms of academic programmes and research infrastructure. Factors such as excellent academic programmes, good placements and, of course, the
desire to be in a big city, all come together to make this the most preferred destination."
Stating that students adopt an overall holistic view while picking their choice, IIT-Delhi director RK Shevgaonkar said this becomes more evident from the distribution of zones among the first 100 students. “Those from the west and south zones prefer IIT-Bombay. There are other factors too. For instance, IIT-Kharagpur is a good institute but students feel it is quite inaccessible, considering that one has to go to Kolkata first. But I would say it is the individual perception of the student that actually matters,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}“We need to analyse the statistics more closely to come to a conclusion as to why this is happening,” said a professor at IIT-Kanpur.
Nishanth R, fourth ranker in JEE-2012, said: “I wanted to study computer science. My seniors told me that the computer science course at IIT-Bombay is the best, and so I opted for it. My choice has nothing to do with the city.”
Sagar, who also landed a seat at IIT-Bombay, agrees.
“The Bombay campus is very nice. Besides, the job placements are good. So I had decided that I should go to IIT-Bombay only,” he said.
