Senior government officials said there will be a complete ban on any kind of road cutting and digging activity from July 1 to September 30, which is the peak monsoon season for Delhi. Officials said all government and private agencies — that take up digging work to lay pipes and cables — have been informed about the restrictions.

Concerned about the frequent digging and cutting of roads by one agency or the other, the government had come up with similar orders in February this year.

Officials said it was important to remind civic agencies, telecom companies and discoms to either complete work that required road digging and cutting by June 30 or postpone it for at least three months.

“Road cutting norms are required to be modified keeping in mind the obstruction it causes to the movement of traffic and pedestrians during the monsoons,” a senior delhi government official said.

“The mud and debris collected during the digging work becomes slush in rains and causes huge inconvenience to the general public. Since the agencies require advance permission for road cutting, the department concerned has already stopped granting permission for any kind of work during the monsoon,” the official added.
