Air India is looking for young men and women for its plans to increase flights from the Delhi Airport.
At present, the national carrier operates more than 700 flights every week from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. By the end of March, when the summer schedule begins, this number would go up to at least 1,000. The airline plans to induct and train 200 new customer service agents to man its counters before the flights increase.
Learning from its mistakes, Air India wants to have enough manpower at Terminal3 of the international airport when the number of passengers increases. The decision to shift its domestic flights to T3 in November last year and also increase flights simultaneously resulted in utter chaos.
The shift and increase in flights happened around Diwali, when a large number of cabin crew and other staff were on leave in Delhi. The result was flight delays and many cases of missing baggage.
To tackle the problem, Air India had to look for experienced personnel in a hurry. The airline also deployed additional staff from other airports in Delhi. This time, however, they would have enough time to train new recruits.
"We will recruit at least 200 personnel in interviews between January 27 and 31 to take care of the shortage," said an Air India spokesman. "The additional manpower will help in augmenting passenger services, in view of increase in number of flights," he said.
"The recruits must be comfortable with technology and we will further train them in our training college," he said. The increase in flights is in keeping with Air India's plans to make its hub-and-spoke model work, with Delhi as the hub. "We are going to announce a One-India fare scheme and with more flights, passengers will enjoy smooth connectivity when travelling abroad from anywhere in India," he said.
