“Privatisation of water distribution system is definitely necessary in Delhi. We want to replicate the same model that we have used in the privatisation of power distribution in Delhi Jal Board (DJB),” she said.

The DJB is already working on a pilot project, which will be implemented at underground reservoirs and water treatment plants in Malviya Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Nangloi and Mehrauli.

The Delhi government claims the project will help reduce theft and leakage of water, estimated to be around 40-60 percent.

“Through individual water connections, all consumers will be get water on demand. Piped water will be available at sufficient pressure. All villages and unauthorised colonies will get household connections too,” said a senior government official.
