The hike in pension will be effective from October 1. The decision was taken on Monday at a Cabinet meeting presided by Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit. “Our government is concerned about the hardships being faced by people in the age group of 70 years and above,” said Dikshit.

The pension will be sanctioned under the Old Age Financial Assistance Scheme of Social Welfare department. Dikshit added that the benefits of the hiked pension will reach to more than 1.6 lakh senior citizens in the mentioned group.

The government will be releasing an additional budget allocation of Rs 34 crore to meet the enhanced liability.
