Govt orders import of onion

The government on Wednesday allowed duty-free imports of onions and asked state-owned trading agencies to import the commodity.

The government on Wednesday allowed duty-free imports of onions and asked state-owned trading agencies to import the commodity.

"I have asked STC, MMTC and PEC to explore the option of quick delivery of onion," commerce secretary Rahul Khullar said.

Also, the directorate general of foreign trade has put an indefinite ban on export of onion. The government had earlier announced suspension of new export permits and sharply raised the minimum export price.
