Gurgaon District jail to go hi-tech in March

The district jail is all set for a revamp. The state information technology wing Hartron (Haryana Electronics Development Corporation) has been asked to install CCTV cameras, mobile jammers and also equip jail wardens with advanced walkie-talkie devices.

Against the total capacity to accommodate 2,400 inmates, more than 1,800 prisoners, including 100 hardcore criminals, from around the region are lodged in the jail at present.

The demand was raised as it was increasingly felt that the 200 jail wardens were technologically handicapped and there was no mode of intra-premises communication.

The walkie-talkies procured nearly seven years ago are no longer handy and the jammers installed by a few cellular companies are not sufficient enough to block signals around the jail premises.

With the lack of surveillance by CCTV cameras, the entire 50-acre jail campus is manually supervised by the wardens.

According to Harender Singh, superintendent of the district jail, the Haryana Jail Department has written to Hartron to initiate the process of procuring and installing the hi-tech gadgets.

He added that bidders would be shortlisted by March.
