Troubled by the irregular supply, Singh is forced to seek out alternatives.

“I am retired but I still live a hard life. I can’t afford to buy drinking water, so I cycle regularly to Poonth, which is about 2 km away, to bring back potable water,” he said.

“Is this what a man my age should be doing?”

With an ailing wife and most of the household chores to be taken care of, Singh has a lot on his mind already. Water scarcity in his sector only compounds his problems.

“My wife is quite ill and it’s just the two of us at home. I try to leave her alone as little as possible. Ideally, I shouldn’t have to leave home to get water, but then, even she needs to drink water,” said Singh, who moved to Rohini from Sarai Rohilla after he retired from service.
