Fourteen-year-old Shiv Dutt was brought to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Hospital in a critical condition on Monday morning.

A Class VII student of Thomas Public School in Uttam Nagar, Dutt had fallen from the terrace of his school’s hostel. Eyewitnesses said the boy suddenly fell on the fence surrounding the hostel.

School authorities called a Police Control Room (PCR) to rescue the boy, who had a two-feet long rod pierced through his neck. The police cut the rod so as not to cause any damage to the neck before rushing him to the nearest hospital.

“At first it appeared to be a complicated case as the rod had gone through the neck and come out from the pre-auricular region, the right ear. But thankfully it had only damaged the parotid gland, causing harm to a few facial nerves,” said Dr Mayank Maheshwari, a senior resident at the department of ENT surgery at the hospital.

“We were relieved when we found that the rod had not damaged the vital organs,” he said.

The doctors said the boy was brought to the hospital in the ‘golden hour’, which is within half hour of the accident. Because of this not much blood was lost.

Dutt is admitted in the Intensive Critical Unit of the hospital and is recovering well. “His condition is stable but he will have to remain under observation until his wounds heal,” said Dr Maheshwari.
