Hi-tech number plates, chaos coming to delhi
From Tuesday, getting a registration plate for new vehicles won’t be that easy.
From Tuesday, getting a registration plate for new vehicles won’t be that easy.

Unlike the existing practice, where car dealers ensure that the registration number and plates are fixed on vehicles before delivery, one will now have to go to the transport authority to get the same done.
With the Delhi government making high-security registration plates mandatory for all new vehicles from May 1, the onus of getting the tamper-proof plates installed is now the owner’s responsibility.
“Dealers will give a slip to the car owner. They will have to go the transport office to get the plates fixed,” an official said.
Transport officials claim the new plates would be fixed in few minutes. But with close to 1,400 new vehicles being registered every day, expect chaos.
The transport department has identified 15 offices for the job. A private firm has been entrusted with the task of fixing the plates.
“From June 15, the private firm will also have to fix plates in the older vehicles. There are more than 70 lakh vehicles registered in Delhi. The firm has just two years to complete the exercise. With just 15 centres, one can think of the chaos this will lead to,” a car dealer said.
