Incidentally, just two days ago, chief minister Sheila Dikshit had instructed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the civic body to 'rationalise' and reduce supply to VIP areas.

The area under New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) generally receives more than 250 litres per capita per day (lpcd) water.

It is far above the world standards of 135 lpcd.

The NDMC control room received calls demanding water tankers clearly mentioning the addresses as 3, Motilal Nehru Marg (chief minister Sheila Dikshit's official residence), Race Course Road complex (the Prime Minister's residence) and also to the residences of Shahnawaz Hussein, BJP leader and former Union minister, and Haroon Yusuf, a Delhi cabinet minister.

However, Amit Prasad, NDMC spokesperson, sought to play down the tanker supply issue.

"These were routine calls and tankers were sent. There are lot of people who stay in the Race Course complex and tankers are sent there on a regular basis," he said.

The calls demanding tankers for the chief minister’s house and the Race Course complex were suspected to be prank, as it could not be verified who made them.
