Filmmaker and TV soap queen Ekta Kapoor visited Hindustan Times House on Monday as part of HT Unplugged, an ongoing series of informal chat sessions between eminent personalities from various fields and senior HT editors.
During the course of the discussion, the 37-year-old opened up about her soap strategies, subjects and successes, and the wish to experiment through her films. “I don’t think my soaps are regressive. I’m currently making four shows and three of their leading ladies are working women. In one, a separated wife’s in-laws are supporting her. Compare it to the other soaps on TV, and you will know why they are not old in their mindset,” she said to questions raised about the much-criticised nature of her popular serials.
Kapoor said her soaps may have followed the same path over the years because they ‘work’, but she is using her earnings from them to experiment
with the films she is producing, such as her next, Kyaa Superkool Hain Hum, which is an adult comedy.
Kapoor also elaborated on how statistics that dictate what channels want are not based on the nature of audiences but their sheer number. On the recent controversy around her film, The Dirty Picture, being banned from a TV premiere at the last hour, she said, “I was shocked. They had a problem with the word ‘dirty’ even after 52 cuts had cleaned up possibly every bit of controversial content in there. I just don’t get it!”
