The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) got its first tip-off that David Headley — charged with conspiracy in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case — wasn’t the immigration consultant he pretended to be from Pakistani security agencies.
This was part of the information the FBI team that came to Delhi shared with Indian investigators.
Intelligence officials here weren’t too impressed with the FBI’s inputs. For one, India wanted voice samples of Headley and associate Tahawwur Rana talking to their handlers in Pakistan. But the FBI told them they didn’t have any such intercepts.
“We had a lot more information and evidence than they (FBI). Headley told them about the places he visited; we’d already tracked his movements and had evidence to back them,” an intelligence official said.
