The villagers loved the girl, but there is no real regret about the murder — they say it was inevitable to save the honour”.

“If you’re from the press, don’t go there. Let them be,” warned a tea shop owner at Chhaprauli-Mangrauli — an area falling a little before Yakutpur under Noida Phase 2 police station. “They’re angry at you people,” he said, taking a good look at our camera.

On Saturday night, the police arrested Karamveer Singh for killing his daughter Bhuri, who wanted to marry Sanjay Kumar (27) against her family wishes.

“Nothing is greater than family honour. When something like this happens, we cannot show our faces in the community. The father already died in a way when his daughter eloped,” said Lachhi Ram, a 70-year-old farmer, who resides next to the slain girl’s house.

The girl, who dropped out of Class 8 last year, was killed on March 1.
