The issue was raised at a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee during which councillors voiced concern over the incident that occurred last week in Mayapuri industrial area.

"The Delhi government should place radiation detection machines at the entry points of the city. There is need to provide enough protection to the citizens," ruling BJP councillor Meera Agarwal said.

Several other councillors said the government should hold a survey in scrap markets to find out what kind of hazardous material is being procured by them.

Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya later told reporters that the civic body does not issue license for such trade. "But if we find out that there are people who have been given license for some other trade and they are illegally dealing in scrap material, we will cancel their licenses," he said.
