Delhi Police claimed to have busted a gang of Manipur based inter-state autolifters with the arrest of one HM Burhanuddin (29) on May 22.
Police said he was riding a stolen motorcycle when he was apprehended at the Arjun Nagar T-point. He was en route to dispose-off a two-wheeler stolen from Mayur Vihar that very day.
The police said his arrest led to the recovery of 33 stolen motorcycles. Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said the accused is a resident of Lillong in Manipur's Thoubal district. She said this gang has a penchant for red-coloured bikes since they are in high demand in Manipur.
"With his arrest, not only have we recovered 33 stolen motorcycles from the active member of the notorious Shana Gang but have also worked out 69 cases of motor vehicle thefts in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand," DCP Sharma said.
During his interrogation, police said, Burhanuddin disclosed the identity of his other associates, Majid Ali alias Shana, Gaffar and Surender Sharma, who is a railway agent at Old Delhi Railway Station.
"The gang used to steal motorcycles from Delhi and dispose them off in Lillong (Manipur) after transporting them via train. Other members of the gang used to take the delivery (of the stolen motorcycles) from the Dimapur railway station for further disposal in various parts of Manipur and Nagaland," said a senior police officer from the investigation team.
He added that a luggage ticket, commonly known as a 'bilty', of a motorcycle booked from the Bhiwani railway station to Dimapur, Nagaland, was found on the accused. This led investigators to believe that the gang had recently booked several motorcycles to be transported from Bhiwani.
"The gang used to steal motorcycles from Delhi and dispose them off in Lillong (Manipur) after transporting them via train. Other members of the gang used to take the delivery (of the stolen motorcycles) from the Dimapur railway station for further disposal in various parts of Manipur and Nagaland," said a senior police officer from the investigation team.
He added that a luggage ticket, commonly known as a 'bilty', of a motorcycle booked from the Bhiwani railway station to Dimapur, Nagaland, was found on the accused. This led investigators to believe that the gang had recently booked several motorcycles to be transported from Bhiwani.
"As per records of the parcel office at Bhiwani station, the gang has, in the last three months, booked 85 bikes, mostly stolen from Safdarjung Enclave, Hauz Khas, Sainik Farms and Daryaganj, to be transported to Dimapur," the officer said.
Police said the gang used to deliver the stolen motorcycles to other members on the directions of gang leader Shana, who used to prepare the forged documents of these motorcycles by replacing the number plates with fake numbers of Rajasthan, Uttrakhand, UP and Haryana.
