Investigators locate eight IM hideouts

The hideouts were being used for sheltering Indian Mujahideen operatives, storing chemicals and preparing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for IM’s future operations.

Investigators have managed to locate at least eight hideouts of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) across the country in the last seven days.

The hideouts were being used for sheltering Indian Mujahideen operatives, storing chemicals and preparing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for IM’s future operations.

“After the August-September 2008 crackdown on the IM which almost decimated its operational capabilities, its top leaders decided to establish as many hideouts as possible. Only top leaders like Yasin Bhatkal had knowledge of these hideouts,” said a counter-terror official.

Yasin was arrested by the NIA on August 29 this year along with his associate Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi from the Indo-Nepal border. On Tuesday, the special NIA court extended the police custody of Yasin for four days and remanded Haddi to the custody of NIA’s Hyderabad unit. Asadullah has now been formally arrested for Hyderabad’s Dilsukhnagar twin blasts.

The NIA officials on Tuesday told the special court here that Yasin and his associates were involved in the 2006 Varanasi blasts and the 2007 court complex blasts of Uttar Pradesh as well.
