Ishrat’s family moves SC against stay on report

The mother of Ishrat Jahan, killed along with three others in June 2004 in Ahmedabad for alleged terror links, moved the Supreme Court on Thursday against the Gujarat High Court (HC) order that stayed a judicial report indicting the state police for the “cold-blooded murders”.

In her petition, Ishrat’s mother Shamima Kauser has challenged the September 9 HC order, staying Ahmedabad Metropolitan Magistrate M.P. Tamang’s report that said it was a “fake encounter” and those killed were not terrorists.

Kauser has sought removal of the stay ordered by the HC and permission to use the Tamang report in accordance with law, an indication that she might seek prosecution of the policemen involved in the killings as also compensation from the state government.

The petitioner also demanded that all records relating to the case be summoned to the apex court.

Ishrat Jahan, a 19-year-old girl from Thane in Maharashtra, was gunned down along with three others on June 15, 2004 on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
