Kites soar high in Delhi despite the downpour

For kite-enthusiasts, August 15 is the most awaited day of the year. However, heavy rains washed away all their week-long preparations for the Independence Day. Rajat Arora reports.

But the downpour could not dampen their spirits. As soon as the rains subsided in the afternoon, the sky was dotted with kites of all shapes and sizes.

"We had specially ordered the manjha and kites from Bareilly. The start of the day was a bit disappointing but the wonderful weather and the right wind in the afternoon made the day perfect for flying kites," said Aqib, a member of an Old Delhi kite-flying squad.

A glimpse of the sky from the rooftops of the walled city seemed more like a base camp for an aerial war. "All kite-flying clubs are fighting for their prestige," said Shadab, a resident of Chandni Chowk.

And this year, Indian kites outnumbered the Chinese ones. Pictures of Bollywood stars, leaders and freedom fighters soared high in the skies.

"We have special kites with lamps attached to them, which we'll fly at night. We have been honing our kite flying skills the whole year just for Independence Day," added Shadab.

Children too were not far behind. Groups of kids could be seen running after kites to add them to their treasure. "I managed to collect four kites. Catching the fallen kites is a sport in itself. While older people fly them, we run and steal them," said Sameer Sharma, 11, a resident of Dariba Kalan.
