The number of Team Anna supporters grew since the morning and stood at 5,000 by 4pm, according to rough estimates.

Hazare, who was into the second day of his fast, has been leading cohorts Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai.

The trio have been on fast since July 25 with 350 others, demanding a strong Lokpal and probes on tainted ministers.

Hazare reiterated that the government would “have to go if it did not bring a strong Lokpal bill as a wave of protest was building up across the country”.

While Team Anna thanked the people for their support, India Against Corruption member Kumar Biswas alleged that power cuts across north India “appeared to be a conspiracy by the government as Hazare was fasting”.

Team Anna supporters at Jantar Mantar on Monday included a number of youngsters, as seen earlier as well.

Kejriwal, citing example of fuel prices, tried explaining how he thought corruption affected inflation: “We can be spared a tax of Rs. 33 per litre on petrol if 5% of what is wasted by the corrupt is saved. That’s how we can get petrol at Rs. 38 per litre.”

He also thrashed the political leadership: “There is no hope from the Congress or the BJP. Neither is there any hope from Narendra Modi, Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha, Mulayam Singh, Mayawati and Lalu Yadav.”

Anil Kumar, a Delhi Metro employee, appeared to be convinced. “Kejriwal’s explanation about petrol prices gave lot of clarity about how corruption affects us.”

Earlier in the day, a group of people tried storming Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar’s residence. The security staff acted in time and prevented them from entering the residence.

Team Anna denied any role in the incident.
