Law exam rules relaxed for women who delivered babies

"By not granting these students relaxation, we will be making motherhood a crime which no civilized democracy in the history of mankind has ever done or will ever do. We cannot make them pay the price for the glory that is motherhood," said Justice Kailash Gambhir.
Justice Gambhir also suggested to the Bar Council of India to make rules for women students claiming relaxation on the grounds of maternity so that they were not deprived of appearing in the LLB examinations.
“If any female candidate is deprived or detained in any of the semester just on the ground that she could not attend classes being in the advanced stage of pregnancy or due to the delivery of the child, then such an act on the part of any of the university or college would not only be completely in negation of the conscience of the Constitution of India but also of the women rights and gender equality this nation has long been striving for," said Justice Gambhir.
The two women law students moved court after they were penalised due to short attendance despite clearing their exams.
One of the students was a student of the VIth semester and her result for the semester was also declared but she was not awarded the degree. The other student was in the IVth semester where she was allowed to appear for the exams but her result was not declared.
The court after hearing the submissions directed the Delhi University to award the degree to one of the students and to declare the result of the other student.
In the five-year law course, a student needs to have a minimum attendance of 75 per cent, while in the faculty of law, Delhi University, the same is 66 per cent.
