The lawyers of district courts in the city went on a daylong strike on Friday, demanding expansion of the jurisdiction of the courts to hear civil disputes relating to property and other matters involving a sum of over Rs 20 lakh.

The district courts at present hear cases, which involve matters worth up to Rs 20 lakh.
The civil matters, involving property and other suits of over Rs 20 lakh, are heard by the Delhi High Court. “There is a complete strike in all the five district courts. Lawyers, barring a few with vested interests, stand united,” claimed Rajiv Khosla, spokesman Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations.
It takes almost 16 years to decide a civil matter in the High Court. It is also costlier for litigants. Such disputes can be disposed of at district courts expeditiously at a lower cost, he said.
