Intellectually disabled children need help in expressing themselves and recreational activities like theatre, dance and Special Olympics help them do so.

This was the theme at the conference on ‘Transforming lives of persons with developmental disabilities through recreational and leisure activities’, held here on Friday.
“Mentally challenged children have a lot of emotion hidden inside them,” said Ranoo Banerjee, joint secretary of National Federation of Parents’ Association for persons with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities.
“You will notice a marked change in special children and adults after they go through a theatre session. They become calmer, more friendly and happier,” said Jayshree Bhattacharya, theatre workshop director, National School of Drama.
