LSR keeps track of its prodigal alumna

A day after results of the Myanmar by-polls were declared, Lady Shri Ram College for Women was abuzz with activity. Classroom discussions and corridor chit-chat was dominated by the landslide victory of their alumna Suu Kyi’s party — which secured 40 of 45 seats.

Classroom discussions and corridor chit-chat was dominated by the landslide victory of their alumna Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy — which secured 40 of 45 seats.

Nobel Prize-winner Suu Kyi did her graduation from LSR in political science between 1961 and 1964. “I remember Suu as a quiet, obedient girl with a flair for creative writing. She would come to school in Ambassadorial Mercedes, her hair in two neat plaits and a trace of arrowroot on her face,” said Malavika Karlekar, who has known Suu Kyi since 1960. They attended school (Convent of Jesus and Mary) and college together.

“Those of us who were her close friends have discussed this many a times that while we always knew that she was the daughter of the maker of modern Burma, she never spoke of a life in politics. In fact, her interests were highly literary,” Karlekar added.

LSR is planning felicitate her in its College Day celebrations on Wednesday.

This is not the first time that the college has expressed its support for her. It had honoured her during its golden jubilee celebrations and also came out in full support she was released from house arrest in November 2010.
