The Maharashtra police are likely to oppose any move to release Delhi University professor GN Saibaba on bail by claiming that the Maoists retaliated to news of his arrest by killing seven policemen in Gadchiroli in a landmine blast, government sources said in New Delhi.

Saibaba is in the custody of Maharashtra police for 14 days for interrogation over his alleged links with Maoists.
“A day after Saibaba’s arrest Maoists killed seven police commandos in Gadchiroli. We suspect that the attack was in retaliation of Saibaba’s arrest. The local police will oppose any future move to release him on bail by arguing about his alleged links with the Maoists,” said a Union home ministry official requesting anonymity.
Saibaba’s name first figured on the police radar after the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University student Hemant Mishra.
Mishra allegedly claimed that he acted as a courier between the professor and Maoists holed up in the Abujhmadh forests of Bastar and Gadchiroli regions. Saibaba was questioned by police in the case.
