Malviya Nagar street to become user-friendly

Soon, the congested street around Malviya Nagar Metro station may become pedestrian and cycle-friendly. A design initiative called Delhi 2050 is working with experts and the community to improve living conditions in the city.

Delhi 2050, an initiative devised by an architecture platform called arch i, is working on a project called 'Aapki Sadak', a plan to improve neighbourhood streets and has chosen Malviya Nagar as a test site.

"The idea is to make the public space safer and more user-friendly. After extensive consultation, we have come up with a plan which will make the street convenient for walking and accommodate street vendors as well as plying of public transport. We have even presented our plans to MLA Kiran Walia," said Tanvi Maheshwari, an architect with arch i.

The project has been funded by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation. The next phase will be to obtain necessary approvals and begin implementation in consultation with government officials. The initiative is also working on a sustainable growth model for the city called Urban Harvest which will create communities that reuse water, undertake urban farming or harvest energy.

In May, Delhi 2050 will engage with educational institutions "to share our ideas and initiate a dialogue, the findings of which will be shared with the public," according to Anne Feenstra, principal, arch i.
