A 35-year-old man allegedly strangled her wife before hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in southeast Delhi's Sangam Vihar early on Thursday. The husband has survived.
Police said the accused husband suspected that his wife was having an extra-marital affair with a neighbour and they had a heated argument on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Meera Devi, 32, while the husband's name is Sri Niwas.
Police said the accused wrote a suicide note addressed to his father-in-law before allegedly strangling his wife and attempting to commit suicide. His life was saved by his 11-year-old son who cut the rope with a sharp object after seeing his father hanging from the ceiling fan around 5.30am. The police have registered a case of murder and attempt to suicide against Niwas and he has been arrested.
During investigation, the senior officer said, it was learnt that the couple had an argument on Wednesday afternoon when Niwas, a driver, made a surprise visit at his house and found Meera talking to someone on the phone.
"He asked her to explain how she got a mobile phone but she refused to answer and an argument broke out between them. The victims' son said last night he saw his father sitting next to his mother, who was asleep at that time. In the morning, he woke up and found his father hanging from the ceiling fan. He immediately cut the rope and raised an alarm," the officer said, adding the couple was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where Meera was pronounced dead on arrival.
