At the meeting of the PM’s Council on Climate Change, Singh said: “It is important that we lose no time in implementing the practical measures that have been identified. While the state governments have been sensitized to the need for such measures, I will invite the chief ministers of the Himalayan States to join in a national effort to safeguard the Himalayan eco-system.”

The announcement comes four days before Himachal Pradesh Chief Minster Prem Kumar Dhumal’s meeting with his counterparts from other Himalayan states on a joint effort to mitigate impacts of climate change. Himachal is the first state in India to declare a target of 2020 to become carbon neutral, which means that the total carbon emissions of the state would be neutralised through its green cover.
